ADDRESSING LONELINESS AMONG GEN Z WORKFORCE

In today’s fast-paced world, loneliness at work has become an increasingly relatable issue. People have confessed to feeling lonely even when they are surrounded by others most of the day. The Gen Z workforce is more likely to experience loneliness in the workplace compared to others. Despite being digitally connected, many of them lack essential in-person social bonds that are critical for well-being. The feeling of loneliness can stem from various factors, such as feeling disconnected, social isolation, lack of meaningful interactions, and impersonal work environments. Although the world has become smaller with the advancement of technology and social media, people are feeling more isolated than before.

Grappling with loneliness can be challenging and overwhelming. However, addressing the issue or delving into the root cause can be the first step towards changing the situation. The important things to understand are:

  • You’re not alone.

  • Healing takes time.

Taking small, consistent steps towards your goal, even when progress may seem slow, will lead you to your desired outcome.

Impact of Workplace Loneliness

1. Causes a strain on interpersonal relationships

Loneliness at work can strain interpersonal relationships as a person starts to withdraw emotionally. This can lead to reduced participation in activities outside of work, decreased communication, and overall mental fatigue. By addressing the issue with your family and peers, they can reach out to help you in more ways.

2. Affects mental as well as physical health

Loneliness can lead to anxiety, depression, and even cardiovascular diseases. A person experiencing loneliness may isolate oneself and might turn to harmful habits like substance abuse, smoking, or alcohol consumption. A study conducted by Duke University in 2016 found that isolation could increase the probability of cardiovascular diseases by 29%.

3. Reduces performance at work

When an individual is facing loneliness, it is natural for him/her to have reduced motivation to work. This, in turn, lowers productivity and can cause the person to burn out sooner.
